2001 Nissan Pathfinder: why can’t I compress the shifter button to shift out of park?

After I start my truck, I have to tap the brake and hold it down for 2-3 minutes before it "unlocks" the shifter in order for me to shift out of park. What can I do to fix this?
I have had my truck since it was brand new in 2001, shifting out of park was never a problem until now. The shifter requires me to compress the brake in order to shift out of park, but now I have to hold the brake down for 2-3 minutes before it unlocks my shifter. What is wrong and how can I fix this?

I have a 2005 Tuscon and I have to press on the brake pedal in order to shift out of park. I do not have to tap, just apply pressure. I checked my manual and it is a safety issue, have you just checked your manual to see if this is a normal function? You did not say how long you have had your vehicle or if it never did this and has now started. Have you looked at any websites for the Pathfinder? There may be somewhere you can ask this question.

Your truck has an electric solenoid that releases the shift rod when you step on the brake. The solenoid may be on its last leg if its taking that long to release. You could also check the connectors to make sure their clean and tight. Its under the dash off the brake pedal.
